NO PRACTICE SAT. FEBRUARY 13!
Due to weather factors, the photos and practice scheduled for Sat. Feb. 13 have been rescheduled for March 6. SLEEP IN COLTS -- PARENTS TOO! No game Sunday, Feb. 14. Have a great weekend!
Coach Mike Hanson and Coach Curt Benson are doing a great job putting together game plans to go with our "special circumstances" this time of year. Grades, so important to everyone, have kept a few of our players off the ice this year, and injuries continue to plague our team. It seems as soon as some are healthy (or passing) some others are not.
In the Feb. 28 game against Flower Mound, the coaches had a game plan they couldn't wait to use. But an early injury to Michael Bohling that concerned everyone about a possible concussion, and equipment malfunctions going on with some of the other players, kept the coaches from getting to use their best laid plans.
Some day, we'll laugh about things like injuries the boys have recovered from and equipment we taped up to make it through the game. For now, we're just hoping everyone stays healthy, everyone gets their grades where they need to be, and equipment gets repaired or replaced.
Go Colts!
Future Leader
Junior Coby Benson is in his second year with the Colts. He's grown about six inches since his first game with the Colts, and he's recently decided he likes to hit. It's been fun watching Coby grow up on the ice!
Thursday Night is Dryland Night
Meet at the track on Thursday nights for some Dry Land Conditioning. Coaches Hanson and Benson are serious about helping our favorite team be the best they can be. Working out with your team can also be fun. Don't miss the Dryland Training at the track on Thursday nights! If you don't know where this is, contact Coach Mike or one of your Colts team mates!
WE LOVE THE COLTS!
The Mesquite Colts prepare to hit the ice during the Winter Games of Texas. The Colts will face Flower Mound for a chance to bring home a bronze medal tonight (Jan. 18) at 7 in Frisco, Texas
Colts Future Bright In Goal
Everybody loves Colts Goalie Paul Hinojo, but looking to the future, the Colts have a great goalie on the horizon in 8th grader John Seitzler. In Sunday's game against Flower Mound, Seitzler made 40 saves on shots flung his way.
Austin Ivy Wins it for the Colts in Overtime
A carefully aimed and beautifully executed shot by Colts freshman Austin Ivy (#12) from the left point zinged past the Arlington Martin goalie to give the Colts an overtime win, 4 - 3 on Sun., Nov. 15. Read more in the game recap - to the right:
Quote of the Week
"The most important thing I learned in that coaching clinic was that the best team to coach in hockey would be made up of a bunch of orphans." -- Coach Mike Hanson
Grinder of the Game: Dylan Nessman
During the Colts Nov. 1 game against McKinney, Assistant Captain Dylan Nessman looked like he wanted to WIN every time he was out on the ice, which was a lot. The senior defenseman hustled on every shift, not only defending the net, but whenever he had a chance to carry the puck toward the net or keep it in at the blue line. Nessman, who also plays awesome as a forward, has the speed and tenacity of a player who comes to win. Let's hope he gets a chance to put a "W" in the column during the Colts next game, Sunday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 in Farmer's Branch against a 2-1-2 Coppell team. GO COLTS!
Note from Blogmaster: We don't have a photo of Dylan. Vanity prohibited it during the "official photo shoot," however we'll get a pic up as soon as we can catch Dylan looking pretty...
Colts Fall to McKinney
If the Colts had only played the first two periods like they played the third, they would have easily beaten this McKinney team on Sunday, Nov. 1, but a slow start had the Colts behind 5-0 toward the end of the second period before junior Coby Benson got the team started (better late than never) with a goal off a bee-line pass from assistant captain Justin Ivy.
Benson's goal rejuvenated what had looked like a defeated team, and the Colts came back in the third with a vengeance. McKinney scored early in the period to make it 6-1, before the Colts rallied for three goals in two minutes to bring the score up to 6-4 with plenty of time for a miracle.
Colts players captain Ethan Fox, sophomore Dalton "Oscar" Watkins, and rookie Matt Jenkin scored in fast succession, and the Colts were poised to do more, but a massive 14 minute penalty against senior Tanner Holubar for cross checking, boarding, and unsportsmanlike conduct just five minutes into the period left the team short handed until the last two minutes of the game. Forced to turn defensive, the Colts did an able job killing the four minutes of penalties before having a last ditch opportunity at full strength.
Unfortunately, the clock simply ran out. Colts lost 6-4 in regulation.
Player of the Week
Sophomore Dalton Watkins, who attends Mesquite Academy, is the Colts player of the game for the week of October 26. Watkins scored the only goal in a tough loss to Arlington Wild, which was the best team the Colts have faced thus far this season. Watkins, who plays right wing, has been playing hockey for ten years. He's also an avid golfer who participates in the Youth Group at Community Life Church in Forney. Dalton is known for his charismatic clothing and piercings, and when he's not on the ice he enjoys skateboarding with his friends. Dalton also is into fishing and auto racing, and he's interested in both art and music. His favorite quote is "Save Ferris," from the classic Matthew Broderick film, "Ferris Buehler's Day Off."

The Colts' Matthew Jenkin
Matthew Jenkin is a 14-year old powerhouse with the speed and agility that comes from beginning his hockey career at age 5. Matthew may not be the biggest kid on the ice this year for the Colts, but his style of play makes him an even match even for kids twice his size. As the team's only leftie, Matthew is adept at left wing, where he knows how to scoot in deep and fast. He's a team player who has quickly bonded and become a fan and team favorite. Matthew is from Forney, where he attends Brown Middle School and is in 8th grade. In addition to playing hockey for the Colts, he plays football at Brown, enjoys inline hockey, and runs cross country. As smart as he is fast, Matthew was valedictorian of his class and achieved straight "A"s the first six weeks of this year. He attends church and is active in The Zone, where he donates items to children and volunteers with the youth programs. A hard worker, he ran his own lawn service during the summer, and also spent time fishing, kayaking, swimming and hiking. Matthew's favorite quote: "Do unto others as you do upon yourself." The Colts are thrilled to have Matthew and his hockey mom, Dawn, as the newest additions to the Colts family.
No Fear from "Little Bubba"
8th grader Cody Richardson showed size is not an issue. His hit on McKinney's biggest player proves he's willing to tangle!
Player Profile of the Week
Assistant captain Tanner Holubar is a 17-year old senior at Mabank High School. After moving to Texas from Boulder, Colorado, he was fortunate to grow up on Cedar Creek Lake, where he could wakeboard and ski right out his back door. However, hockey has been his first love since attending his first Denver Grizzlies games at the age of 3. He learned to skate on the ice at CU in Boulder at age 4 and became a diehard hockey fan when the Avalanche came to town and won the Stanley cup their first year in Denver. Tanner enjoys water sports and has worked at the Cedar Creek Country Club pool. He also plays baseball for Mabank High School and is a member of the school's broadcast team. He hopes to attend college at Mizzou, OSU, or Western State College of Colorado and major in sports journalism.
